Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a key calming neurotransmitter in the brain. Clinical studies show that the natural GABA found in Thorne's PharmaGABA helps decrease stress-related beta brain waves while increasing alpha-wave production, creating deep physical relaxation with sustained mental clarity. Additional studies have shown reductions in pupil size, heart rate, and natural stress markers—salivary cortisol and chromogranin A—indicating relaxation. GABA is also associated with improved sleep quality.

In a direct comparison between natural PharmaGABA and synthetic GABA in a double-blind trial, only natural PharmaGABA produced these positive effects. PharmaGABA-250 provides 250 mg of natural GABA per capsule, while PharmaGABA-100 offers 100 mg per capsule. Both are non-habit forming.

In a recent study on nutrient supplementation and muscle mass, 21 men (average age 39) with no regular exercise routine were given either 10 grams of whey protein alone or 10 grams of whey protein plus 100 mg of PharmaGABA daily over 12 weeks. Both groups engaged in twice-weekly, 60-minute strength training sessions, including leg presses, leg extensions, leg curls, chest presses, and pull-downs. The group receiving whey protein plus PharmaGABA showed a significant increase in total body lean muscle mass compared to the whey-only group.

Thorne's natural GABA is created through a fermentation process involving Lactobacillus hilgardii, the same beneficial bacteria used to ferment cabbage in traditional Korean kimchi.
